Lithuanian sign language interpreter becomes sensation of Donny Montell’s Eurovision performance

Laura Levita Valytė

Laura Levita Valytė, a Lithuanian sign language interpreter, is one of the people who are making this year’s Eurovision Song Contest accessible to people with hearing impairment.

Valytė, who has been using the sign language to communicate since early childhood, was interpreting Montell’s and five other songs for the European audience on Thursday. Her expressive and very musical rendition of “I’ve Been Waiting For This Night” has become an internet sensation.

Valytė says she had put in much time into preparations, analysing the lyrics and the performance in order to render her interpretation as close to the original as possible.

Each spoken language has its own version of signs, therefore Valytė also had to make sure that her interpretation is comprehensible not just to Lithuanians.

Lithuania’s entry was among the ten performances that made it to Saturday’s finale. Donny will be performing in the 16th spot.
