Lithuanian state coffers to take €1m hit as MPs lose seats

The upcoming elections will see a range of payouts by the Office of the Parliament hitting up to €1 million as members of parliament lose their seats, with their assistants also entitled to severance payments.

Even for Lithuanian politicians who have failed to sit in parliament for the full term will be entitled to claim compensation of at least €5,000. MPs who have spent several terms in parliament will be eligible to receive over €15,000.

Figures from the Office of the Seimas indicate around a half of parliamentarians change every election, so about 70 MPs and around 250 assistants are likely to be claiming the payments.

The severance packages were put in place in the expectation that politicians may fail to find a job after losing their seat in the parliament.
