Lithuanian truck driver manages to jump out before train crash in Italy

“According to the embassy in Italy, the Lithuanian citizen was not injured in the crash and managed to jump out of the vehicle,” Rasa Jakilaitiene, spokeswoman for the foreign minister, told BNS Lithuania on Thursday.

Two people died and 18 were injured when the train derailed after hitting the Lithuanian-registered truck near Torino. The truck was heading to a warehouse nearby.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the truck had tried unsuccessfully cross a railway crossing. Three train cars derailed after the train hit the truck.

The Lithuanian Embassy in Italy has contacted and is in touch with local police regarding more detailed information about the incident. There are no Lithuanian citizens among the victims.
