Lithuanian universities threatened by dropping enrolment

This year, 28,000 graduates have applied to study in over 40 higher education institutions in Lithuania, 4,000 fewer than last year.

As many as 100 study programs are currently under a threat of discontinuation due to low enrolment. However, universities still believe they will counterbalance this problem with students from abroad.

However, the Ministry of Education and Science is determined not to fund programs that fail to attract applicants.

“Universities decide to merge, or even to go bankrupt, of course, it is difficult for the state controlled ones, but we intend not to finance programs that are not cost-effective, where students cannot get jobs, because now there will be a lot of criteria according to the law,” said Rolandas Zuoza, Vice Minister of Education and Science.
