“The election silence period started at 1 a.m. (on Saturday) for everyone all over Lithuania,” Zenonas Vaigauskas told BNS.
“We are asking for all political campaigning to be stopped on Internet sites. Information that constitutes political advertising should not be liked and shared. The law must be respected,” the chairman said.
The law does not prohibit distributing general information about the elections or urging people to go to the polls, he added.
In Vaigauskas’ words, any member of a district electoral commission can register violations of the election law, but fines are imposed by a court.
