Lithuanians have highest rate of cardiovascular-related problems in EU

Every second of Lithuanian will die from a cardiovascular disease, and every third adult in Lithuania has an increased blood pressure reflecting the fact that Lithuania has one of the highest rates of cardiovascular problems in the EU.

In Lithuania 56% of people die from cardiovascular diseases which is almost double the rate of other EU member states. Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of death in Lithuania and across Europe.

Lithuanian University of Health Sciences professor, Lithuanian Society of Cardiology president Professor Rimvydas Šlapikas, major cardiovascular disease risk factors are smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, type II diabetes, poor nutrition, physical inactivity, obesity, alcohol abuse and mental and social stress.

He said it was very important to understand that the cardiovascular diseases and conditions do not appear out of nowhere.

“They are determined by the long-term risk factors – high blood pressure, increased cholesterol levels, smoking and other risk factors,“ he said.

These and other important issues will be discussed at the International Congress of Cardiology “Breaking the Cardiovascular continuum“ which will be held in Vilnius from May 26-28.
