The biggest bakery in the Baltics has opened a new upgraded plant in Vilnius.
The new plant of Vilniaus Duona, inaugurated on Thursday, represents €9.3 million in investment and will employ 147 workers.
President Dalia Grybauskaitė, who attended the opening ceremony, commended the company for investing into modern and innovative production lines.
“Innovation is entering traditional industry. Traditional industry, based on innovative solutions and business efficiency, is crucial to the Lithuanian economy,” President Grybauskaitė said.
Gediminas Jukna, director for commerce at Vilniaus Duona, says one new production line will be dedicated to making sandwich bread, a product that is growing increasingly popular. Another new line will increase the company’s white bread production capacity.
The upgraded plant also features special air filters, making the air in the so-called clean room 10,000 times cleaner than outside.
Vilniaus Duona has two plants in Lithuania, in Panevėžys and Vilnius. The company is owned by Vaasan Oy, part of the Nordic group Lantmannen.
Last year, Vilniaus Duona’s revenue grew 1.9%, to €29,7 million.
