Ten songs out of 17 that were performed in Vienna on Thursday were selected by an international vote of juries and TV viewers to proceed to the Eurovision Song Contest final concert.
Besides Lithuania’s, other lucky entries were from Poland, Slovenia, Sweden, Norway, Montenegro, Cyprus, Azerbaijan, Latvia and Israel.
A sigh of relief echoed throughout Lithuania as Linkytė and Baumila’s song was the first one to be named among the finalists. On Saturday, the Lithuanian duo will perform in the seventh spot out of 27.
The Lithuanian success, attributed by many to Baumila’s sex appeal and shirtless photos circulated by the delegation’s PR team, was likely helped by the double “gay kiss” between two male and two female dancers during the Lithuanian performance.
In a press conference after the show Linkytė and Baumila were asked whether the kiss was a message to Europe. Vaidas replied that he and Monika were not trying to pull a stunt, but rather meant it as a sign of Lithuania’s integration in Europe and equality.
