Lithuania’s president off to EU summit on economic inequality

The leaders will discuss ways of promoting fair employment, growth, social benefits and other aspects of social welfare. In Gothenburg, the EU leaders will sign a declaration on enhancement of social rights that will help ensure more money for social needs in the EU’s new multi-annual budget.

In Grybauskaitė’s words, the declaration is sending a message that the new EU budget after 2020 will pay more attention to social issues rather than infrastructure investments.

“In the new EU seven-year budget, more European money and structural funds will be directed towards the well-being of people rather than asphalt,” the president said in an interview broadcast on the national radio LRT on Friday.
