Lithuanian hotels and accommodation providers received close to half a million (468,800) tourists during the first quarter of this year, 12.2% more than in the same period in 2015.
The numbers of local tourists increased by 12.9% and foreign tourists increased by 11.5%. The number of tourists from EU countries visiting Lithuania increased by 12.9% in the first quarter of 2016, and the number of tourists from non-EU countries grew by 10.1%.
The number of tourists coming from the countries neighbouring Lithuania has also grown. Visitors from Latvia grew by 24.7% from Poland by 10.1% and the number of tourists from Belarus grew by 10.6%. After a long period of decline, the flow of tourists from Russia also increased by 0.7%.
Tourists from neighbouring countries (Belarus, Russia, Latvia and Poland) currently account for almost half (49.8%) of all inbound tourism in Lithuania.
Spanish tourists stayed longest at 4.8 nights on average while German visitors were next at 3.4 nights.
More than half (50.2%) of all the country’s tourism market currently consists of local tourists. In the off-season local tourism helps to reduce seasonal fluctuations.
