After receipt of information from prosecutors, the commission also established gross violations of the law on elections to local governments.

In run-off voting last weekend, Zivile Pinskuviene (55.44 pct) of the Labour Party was elected as mayor, defeating Social Democrat Andrius Jozonis (43.58 pct).

Zenonas Vaigauskas, the chairman of the election watchdog, said suspected buyers of votes were detained in Širvintos in addition to four persons charged with administrative violations.

“The situation is abnormal and the elections will have to be repeated,” said Vaigauskas.

The Labor Party may take the commission’s decision to the Supreme Administrative Court for a decision that would be final and not subject to appeals.

Lithuania’s Central Electoral Commission on Saturday cancelled results of the recent elections to local governmental councils and mayors in Šilutė, as well, over violations of election laws.

The commission’s chairman Zenonas Vaigauskas said that the violations reported in Silute lead to a suspicion of reglued early voting envelopes, in addition to a few investigations of voter bribing that are in progress.
