MEP Kubilius disappointed with Georgian constitutional amendment

Andrius Kubilius, Member of the European Parliament and Chair of the EPP Lithuanian delegation expresses concern with recent developments in Georgia, when the constitutional amendment on the transition to a proportional electoral system was rejected in the Georgian Parliament on 14 November.

‘It is disappointing that the ruling party in the Georgian Parliament failed to consolidate the support for this important reform. The transition from the mixed electoral system to proportional was demanded by the People of Georgia, and the Parliament failed to listen to its voters. However, I hope, that this vote is not a definite one, and the Parliament will come back to the issue and a compromise will be found. Meanwhile, I invite political majority and the opposition to enter into a meaningful discussion on how to overcome this setback, so that the next Parliamentary elections would be conducted under the proportional system, as pledged by the Georgian Government and to which all political players are committed,’ MEP Andrius Kubilius said.

The constitutional amendment on the transition to a proportional electoral system was rejected in the first reading in the Parliament of Georgia as the number of supporting votes failed to reach the required minimum of 113 votes in favour.
