Merkel says Germany will help defend Baltic States

Grybauskaitė made thee comments in Berlin after meeting with German chancellor Angela Merkel. According to Grybauskaitė, German forces will join an effort to strengthen NATO’s collective defensive measures in the Baltic states and prevent any potential aggression.

Lithuanian president Dalia Grybauskaitė said that Russia’s unpredictable and aggressive behaviour, hostile and hateful propaganda, cyber-warfare attacks and the provocations against NATO ships and aircraft in the Baltics, which have all the signs of hybrid warfare, are all serving to destroy peace and security in Europe.

German chancellor Merkel said that Germany would agree to contribute to the defence of the Baltic states but did not go into detail on how. Merkel also emphasised that discussions regarding possible decisions to be made at the NATO summit meeting to be held in Warsaw this July are still ongoing.

Grybauskaitė emphasised that Germany was taking a leading role in the field of military cooperation and was becoming a more important security partner.

This year, 600 German soldiers will arrive in Lithuania together with several hundred units of military equipment.
