“I’m still analyzing this possibility. I want to meet with those schools once again to make sure that I do no harm. I have doubts and that’s why I decided to postpone,” Eugenijus Jovaiša told BNS.
The Seimas last week planned to vote on Jovaiša’s draft amendment to the Law on Education, but it was removed from the agenda.
“I’m making a pause to make my final decision after discussing it with the schools,” the lawmaker said.
If passed, the amendment would oblige international schools in Lithuania to ensure that their students can learn Lithuanian history and geography and the basics of citizenship.
Jovaiša said while tabling the amendment that international schools enroll not only foreigners, but also Lithuanian citizens “who fail to complete a full-fledged course in Lithuanian history, geography and civic education in schools lawfully operating in Lithuania”.
