MP submits proposal to expand Lithuania’s armed forces

MP Paulauskas has registered the Law on Establishing the Principal Structure of the Armed Forces in 2016 and Approving the Margin Number of Statutory Servants in the Civil National Defence Service.

Based on the project, in 2021 the aggregate margin number of statutory servants in the civil national defence service should vary from 20,040 to 31,660. Of this amount the margin number of professional soldiers would be from 14,000 to 19,000, volunteers and other active reserve soldiers – from 5,500 to 6,300, conscripts carrying out mandatory initial military service – from 3,000 to 3,500, servicemen undergoing junior officers’ training – from 350 to 590. In 2021 the margin number of generals and admirals would be up to 14, colonels and sea captains – up to 53, lieutenant colonels and commanders – up to 2018, majors and lieutenant commanders – up to 647.

According to MP Paulauskas, in 2021 compared with 2015, additional appropriations from the state budget totalling to EUR 122.6 million would be needed to implement the changes proposed in the draft law.
