“The new parliament should pass laws that would facilitate Lithuania’s economic development and thus improve the well-being of the people of Lithuania,” Adamkus told journalists after casting his ballot together with his wife on Sunday.

The ex-president said that members of the 2016-2020 parliament should undertake reforms of the country’s education system.

Adamkus said he voted for the candidates who should not only restore confidence but also the respect to the parliament.

“I voted for stability. I believe the choice made by the people will give an opportunity to form a stable government, even in case of a coalition,” said the president.

Adamkus also expressed disappointment in some decisions made by the current ruling bloc.

Voting in polling stations across Lithuania will close at 8 p.m. local time on Sunday.
