No difference between Landsbergis’ nationalism and Putin’s, claims Andriukaitis

“All nationalisms today destroy the modern foundations of Lithuania and the European Union. They are all trying to build walls between European Union countries again. Victor Orban, Vladimir Putin, Jaroslaw Kaczynski and Vytautas Landsbergis nationalisms in essence are the same, the only difference being the name of the enemy and the scale of conspiracy theories,” said Andriukaitis, the Lithuanian Social Democrat and EU commissioner, speaking to news portal euractiv.com on Wednesday.

“We are talking about Putin’s nationalism, but there is also Orban’s nationalism, Landsbergis’ nationalism,” Andriukaitis said.

The Lithuanian European Commissioner was also among the most vocal critics of the possible awarding of the Freedom Prize to Landsbergis.

“Vytautas Landsbergis was never a dissident. In Soviet times, he only was an Honoured Culture Worker in LTSR for works that commemorate M.K. Čiurlionis. But he was not a freedom fighter,” said Andriukaitis.
