“There are no visits and meetings presently,” he said at a video conference hosted by DELFI, commenting on his relationship with the president’s office.

Direct contacts between the prime minister and the president stopped in the wake of the so-called “Vijūnėlė manor” scandal after it turned out that Ričardas Malinauskas, the social democrat mayor of the spa resort Druskininkai, had sought a government resolution scrapping zoning regulations in resort towns.

“Before mid-January of this year, I had a good relationship with the president. We would discuss all issues, usually every Monday morning, and for some reason, this changed while I was on vacation. That was a big surprise to me. This was because of the Vijūnėlė manor scandal, which did not involve any action on my part, except that this item was added to the agenda,” the prime minister said.

“(Meetings with the president) continued for a while (after the scandal), but then these visits stopped,” he said.

The president’s office told BNS that “relevant issues are being discussed with the government at the level of advisors”.
