A Freedom Picnic organized by a journalist Andrius Tapinas drew thousands in Kaunas, and even though it was branded a non-political event and there was no politicking, it drew leading Lithuanian political figures.
The Homeland Union – Lithuanian Christian Democrats, the Liberal Movement and the Peasant and Greens Union connected to the event in different ways, with even the President Dalia Grybauskaitė visiting the picnic.
Tapinas started to organize the festival after his plans to meet with the local population in Ringaudai were banned by the mayor of the Kaunas district Valerijus Makūnas.
Tapinas has links with the Liberal Movement and with Antanas Guoga who has financed Tapinas website and his TV programme Pinigų karta.
A well-known artist Andrius Mamontovas who participated in the picnic has established a charity funded in concert with the Peasant and Greens Union leader Ramūnas Karbauskis.
A big conservative delegation were also present at the Picnic – party chairman Gabrielius Landsbergis, former chairman and current leader of the conservative parliamentary group Andrius Kubilius, Kęstutis Masiulis, and former Foreign Affairs Minister Audronius Ažubalis.
