The opposition, led by the conservative Homeland Union-Lithuanian Christian Democrats, want to impeach Labour Party MP Vytautas Gapšys who was recently convicted for manipulating his party’s books. The opposition also want to look into the Labour Party’s finances which failed to account for almost €7 million in income about a decade ago.

The call for an extraordinary session was supported by the Homeland Union, the Liberal Movement and the non-affiliated MPs.

The Lithuanian Court of Appeals recently handed down a verdict in the so-called Labour Party case, overturning a fraud conviction for Gapšys, but upholding the sentence for fraudulent bookkeeping.

The Labour Party maintains that Gapšys cannot be impeached, because the offence was committed before he was elected to parliament.

The Labour Party is a member of the ruling coalition and its member Loreta Graužinienė is the Seimas speaker.
