Many visitors still go for a swim after 18:00 when the lifeguards used to shut down their stations but from June 1 the 20 rescue stations which cover 22km of beach will be open until 8 pm.

Palanga lifeguard manager Jonas Pirožnikas said the lifeguards would also be using drones for the first time to save lives and patrol the beach

“It is a great tool for prevention. If we rescue people still on shore, then we will not need a lot of effort in the water,” said Pirožnikas, recounting that last year a girl lost in a crowded beach was quickly found using the drone.
