In his words, the long-time members who left the party also pin to vain expectations, as the departure probably means demise of their political career.

Grinius said the Social Democratic Party would now face a difficult search for identity and separation from the earlier image of a nomenclature party, as well as a challenge to show true renovation, especially since the party is led by a chairman convicted of corruption.

“Everything will depend on the next elections – will the party recover or remain a party of some ten mandates. And I believe it will be very hard for it to build an image of a revived and advanced party, since the chairman has a criminal past. Whatever they may say (…), this will be emphasized in a rather sharp manner during the election campaign, aiming to find the difference between the new Social Democrats and the old Labor Party,” said the reviewer.

In his opinion, the veterans who consider a come-back in two years have also lost the sense of the situation – the withdrawal of Gediminas Kirkilas, Algirdas Butkevičius, Juozas Bernatonis and others means the sunset of their political career in a few years.
