Over 1.7 million passengers went through Lithuania’s airports during the first five months of 2016, up 14.7% on the same period last year, according to preliminary data from Statistics Lithuania.
The most popular destinations for passengers were to and from Britain (375,800, or 21.6%), Germany (170,400, or 9.8%), and Norway (139,200, or 8%).
In May alone, passenger traffic was up 12.9% to 449,700. Passenger numbers to and from Denmark jumped 74.7%, Spain, while traffic to Spain was up 28.9%, while numbers to the UK rose 19.8%.
The country’s airports handled a total of 5,500 tons of cargo and mail in the same period, up 19.2% from a year ago.
However, Lithuanian air carriers saw their total passenger numbers fall by 7.9% in the first five months of 2016 from a year ago to 166,600 passengers. The total volume of cargo and mail handled by Lithuanian air carriers fell 31% to 186.7 tons.
