Lithuanian Peasant and Greens Union leader Ramūnas Karbauskis has said he will run for parliament in a single-seat constituency in Panevėžys where he will challenge the prominent conservative MP Rasa Juknevičienė, former defence minister.
Karbauskis says he picked the district in Panevėžys in order to avoid competition with his deputy Rima Baškienė, who will traditionally contend for a Seimas seat in next October’s elections in Šiauliai.
“I have decided to take Panevėžys district Mayor‘s Povilas Žagunis invitation to stand in Aukštaitijos constituency and to become a representative of the people of Panevėžys in the parliament. I respect and appreciate all potential competitors in elections, I wish them we conduct positive election campaigns based on moral values,” Karbauskis told panskliautas.lt
The Peasant and Greens Union recently announced that the popular Interior Minister Saulius Skvernelis will run for parliament with the party. So far, however, it is unclear whether Skvernelis will be in the party’s list or will also run for a seat in a single-member constituency.
