“As to documents, I just mentioned that we had a decision concerning not only the Polish ethnic minority. We are, first and foremost, talking about our citizens who have mixed marriages and have the right to take their spouse’s surname in its original form. There can be no discrimination. The same principles will apply to the Polish ethnic minority,” Skvernelis told BNS after meeting with Szydło.
“I mentioned that this issue was to be introduced before the Seimas (on Tuesday),” he added.
The Lithuanian prime minister met with his Polish counterpart during his visit to Tallinn.
“We did not voice any claims to each other. We just discussed the longstanding problems. In their opinion and in our opinion, there were no claims and demands. It was the first business-like meeting and I am really very glad about both the atmosphere and the content itself,” Skvernelis said.
Two alternative bills on name-spelling in documents are planned to be introduced before the Lithuanian parliament on Tuesday. One of them would allow using non-Lithuanian Latin-based characters for names and surnames in documents and the other would allow the original spelling only on an additional page of one’s passport.
