Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius confirmed this after meeting Paksas on Wednesday.

“I have just met with the leader of the Order and Justice party, and it was agreed that the current Head of the Police Department Saulius Skvernelis (is going to be proposed to take the interior minister’s seat – ELTA),” said Butkevičius.

“He is a person who has great experience in the area and I think he decided to carry out a very serious reform in the Police Department. As you know, he fulfilled really great tasks in a very short time – rotation in police units began, some infrastructure projects are being implemented, payment system has been settled. He is a man who earned a great deal of trust in a short time,” said the prime minister.

Former minister of the interior, Dailis Alfonsas Barakauskas, resigned last week, soon after law enforcement revealed it was looking into suspected corruption in the ministry’s public procurement contracts.
