Police unions fear Skvernelis reforms will be scrapped

“It is unfortunate that ambitions of some politicians can defeat professionalism and sanity,” said the NPPS chairman Vladimir Banel.

“We will take legitimate, but sharp measures, if the current reforms are not fulfilled or will be stopped,” said Banel.

He said union officials were worried that law enforcement system reforms will be scrapped after Skvernelis steps down.

The reforms that Skvernelis has started but failed to finish include raising police officer salaries, maintenance issues, the development of an administrative offenses code, an internal service statute that has not been implemented, and law enforcement budgets for 2016 and 2017 that have not been finalised, according to Banel.

“The law enforcement budget for 2016 must be reviewed and an adequate funding for 2017 has to be planned. Otherwise it will be impossible to ensure security in the country in the current international political situation,” said Banel.
