Higher than permitted levels of enterobacteriaceae have been found in granular curd [grūdėta varškė] in tests and Lithuanian authorities said this meant that hygiene requirements had not been followed or that the production line for the products had been contaminated.
Instances of misleading dairy labelling were also detected with yogurt drinks and cream cheese showing a different composition than indicated on the package in laboratory tests. The Lithuanian authorities said the products had higher levels of preservatives.
Lithuania’s State Food and Veterinary Service said that the products found to have violated regulations had been removed from the shelves of major store chains in Lithuania.
Deividas Kliučinskas, the deputy director of State Food and Veterinary Service claimed that the quality of Lithuanian dairy products was higher because all milk processing plants have strict control and monitoring systems.
