Political scientist: President Grybauskaitė’s invitation to Davos sign of recognition

“In fact it probably shows her recognition as, in the first place, a person, then, as a president who recently was very visible in the international media. She was seen there from two aspects: first of all, as a rather stern critic of Russia and, as the head of Lithuania, a country which managed to make a fairly decisive step towards getting rid of its energy dependence on Russia,” the political scientists told the new agency Elta.

As reported, Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė has been invited to attend the WEF 2015 in January. Brybauskaitė will be one of the keynote speakers in the prestigious forum held each year in Davos, Switzerland.

According to Janeliūnas, the liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal, patronised by the president, and which came into operation in early December, stands as one of the best examples not only to the Baltic States but to the entire Europe how to significantly change one’s situation on the energy market in a relatively short period of time.

“It was thanks to a couple of these significant moments that Grybauskaitė earned the reputation that she has now,” he said.

The analyst says that Grybauskaitė was not invited to Davos earlier because she started enjoying bigger visibility in the international media only during the last year. Janeliūnas notes that normally heads of smaller countries are rare guests at the WEF as it is mostly attended by heads of bigger countries and large corporations, while the Davos WEF is a relatively closed club of key players.
