Political scientist says Liberal leader made best decision possible after bribery accusations

After the announcement on Thursday that Liberal Movement party leader Eligijus Masiulis was under investigation for allegations of having taken a bribe of €100,000, he resigned from his position as head of the party and withdrew his candidacy for the Seimas.

Kęstutis Girnius, the docent of the International Relations and Political Science Institute at Vilnius University, said he made the best decision possible for the party. “This is the most useful decision he could have made,” said Girnius. “If he is accused and knows that the case will drag on for months, if not years, so now you can criticise the Liberals, but not through their resigned chairman.”

“I find it strange that he has withdrawn his candidacy, because if he’s not guilty, why should he do that?” said Girnius. “Right now, it’s possible that there are accusations that he knows he cannot defend himself from. I’d like to believe that this is not the case, but we cannot reject that possibility.”
