Investment in the port’s expansion will exceed 0.5 billion euros, according to Arvydas Vaitkus.

“Ships are growing rapidly in their parameters all across the world. We must be adequately prepared for that. In the future, we’ll have to make it possible to steer the biggest ships into the port even in the worst possible weather conditions. Otherwise our port may become unattractive,” he told BNS.

In general, the port plans to invest 554 million euros in expansion, Vaitkus says.

“It covers a number of our facilities in our investment plans… It covers various plans, including the expansion of the existing port,” he said.

On Tuesday, the Commission of the Liquefied Natural Gas Terminal Project held a meeting in Klaipėda and discussed the port’s expansion, among other things.

Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius said after the meeting that a new plan for the port’s expansion should be approved in 2017 and the port’s territory might be increased to 32,600 hectares.
