Portuguese president to visit his country’s troops in Lithuania

The presidents will discuss the security situation in Europe and NATO cooperation at their meeting in Lithuania’s second-biggest city of Kaunas, Grybauskaitė’s press office said on Monday.

A company of Portuguese troops has been deployed for training in Tauragė, a town west of Kaunas, on a rotational basis. The country also actively participates in the Baltic air-policing mission and has contributed military personnel to NATO’s headquarters in Vilnius.

Grybauskaitė and de Sousa will discuss the EU‘s energy security and response to hybrid threats. At an Espoo international conference, Portugal expressed its strong support for Lithuania’s position that the Astravyets nuclear power plant under construction in Belarus poses a threat to the whole o f Europe. Like Lithuania, Portugal operates a liquefied natural gas terminal and was among the first countries to import LNG from the United States.

The presidents will also discuss key issues on the EU agenda, including Brexit talks, response to the migration crisis, and closer EU cooperation on security and defense issues.
