President and minister visit rural social care centre

“The centre is modestly equipped, has modestly dressed children, but everyone here cares,” said the President.

The president and minister were keen to talk to people on the ground who were carrying out the addiction treatment program as well as with those who participated in the program. The initiative has been running for the last five years and the district’s mobile unit is ready to come help those in need at any time of the day.

Over four years, more than 200 people with addictions were treated with funding from Alytus municipality, with 32 of them living sober for at least a year.

“Whatever the laws are, everything depends on the willingness of people to help whether they are from government or no. Whether it is when there is something wrong with neighbours or their children, and they are ready to take care of the children and provide other assistance. Many are able to do so in Alytus region, and it is an example to others,” said the Lithuanian president.

In mid-February the Ministry of Social Security and Labour should finalize and publish a plan to help to disadvantaged families and Alytus district is seen as giving an example of a successful approach.
