He will assume his new position on March 31.

Janukonis will replace Petras Vaitiekūnas after he retired from diplomatic service.

“We will continue our assistance to Ukraine, including economic and humanitarian. We need to continue the existing policy. The existing policy has been very comprehensive and we need to continue that line that has earned us respect in Ukraine and the European Union,” Janukonis had told journalists in the middle of February.

In Lithuania, ambassadors are appointed and recalled by the president upon the nomination of the government and approval of the parliamentary Committee of Foreign Affairs.
