In an interview to the Polish-language radio station Znad Wilii broadcast on the eve of March 11, Lithuania’s Restoration of Statehood Day, Grybauskaitė said the geopolitical situation was currently “far more aggressive and less reliable” than what it was a few years ago.
“We realize and are happy that our citizens understand the challenges in the same way as the administration does, we are glad to see various nationals joining the recruits: young people of Polish, Ukrainian and Russian nationalities alongside Lithuanians, representatives of other nations also come to the riflemen‘s union. Consequently, we see that the response is indeed adequate, the people understand that freedom needs to be defended physically, as well,” said the president.
Asked about the participation of the Polish community in the state and public life, she said she would want to see more initiative.
“I would indeed want to see more of this and probably more active participation in life in Lithuania,” she said.
Grybauskaitė emphasized that Poles were indispensable in various fields of public life, fostering traditional heritage.
