President presents letters of credence to Lithuania’s ambassador to Council of Europe

According to a press release of the President’s Office, the two discussed a number of issues of pressing importance to Lithuania and the Council of Europe.

Speaking about the Council of Europe’s position regarding the crisis in Ukraine, President Grybauskaitė said that the Committee of Ministers needed to take a stronger stand on Russia’s actions in Ukraine. According to the president, the Council of Europe must evaluate Russia’s actions in the context of this conflict and assess its membership commitments within the Council.

The European Union’s accession to the European Convention on Human Rights – supported by Lithuania – was also touched upon at the meeting. The Convention will enable to examine individual complaints by citizens of member states and will enhance the protection of human rights across the European Union.

Vytautas Leškevičius graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy at Vilnius University. He started his diplomatic career in 1996 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs where he held a number of positions. Before his appointment as ambassador to the Council of Europe, Leškevičius was Political Director and Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs. He is married with two children.
