Lithuanian Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius has promised to step down as the leader of the Social Democratic Party if the party has to return to the opposition benches after the upcoming parliamentary elections.
Butkevičius said he expects to win at least as many seats in the parliament as the party currently has, which is 39 seats.
“The party had excellent ratings for three and a half years, the party leads the government. Every candidate to the parliament understands the need for direct contact with voters. This is a direct way to transmit information,” he said.
On resigning if the Social Democrats were not returned to government he said: “This is the fate of the chairman, if the party fails in the election – it is clear that in a democratic state it can happen – I will have to give up the chairmanship of the party,” said Butkevičius.
