“We managed to establish a person who possibly produced 50-euro bills. The person has been detained and we found nearly all the equipment necessary to make the bills,” Deputy Police Commissioner General Edvardas Sileris.
In his words, the euro notes were produced under home conditions and were of mediocre quality.
“It seems like many people were involved in the distribution, but we have two suspects by the evidence we have today,” he added.
According to data available to the police, about 870 possibly counterfeit euro bills have been withdrawn from circulation since the country adopted the new currency on 1 January 2015.
Police Commissioner General Linas Pernavas noted that Europol had listed one fake euro bill as made in Lithuania. The authorities established that the counterfeit euros were mainly in circulation in the Kaunas region.
“One cliché was used exceptionally for Lithuania,” said the police chief.
