The office said in a statement on Thursday that, in its opinion, “the responsible authorities have not yet exhausted their rights to defend the public interest independently” in the matter.

The prosecutors said that they could take a procedural decision to defend the public interest only after receiving the findings of a comprehensive analysis.

Vilnius Mayor Remigijus Šimašius has asked the Prosecutor General’s Office to defend the public interest and to identify persons responsible for the failure to ensure a proper long-term maintenance of the historic mound.

Vilnius’ local authority has declared an emergency situation due the critical condition of Gediminas Hill, warning that new landslides might put the capital’s landmark Gediminas Castle Tower on the top of the mound in danger of collapsing.
