Public’s tolerance for tax evasion in Lithuania is falling

The State Tax Inspectorate‘s (VMI) anonymous hotline, which has been operating for the past 10 years, has added €32 million to the state’s budget, and the number of calls it receives is growing every year, according to VMI representatives.

“We’ve noticed increased activity among residents, especially in 2014 and 2015, when the number of calls exceeded four thousand. This year, we’ve already received 1,700 notifications. We usually receive calls about catering services. We also receive complaints about hospitality service companies, autorepair shops, construction companies,” said VMI representative Valmira Jakienė.

She said that that they usually receive notifications about salaries being paid in envelopes, the hiding of income by denying receipts, and about illegal workers.
