Currently, Lithuania’s public service includes about 52,600 employees.

“Once we finalize the concept of civil servant, their number will decline considerably – I would say down to some 20,000. The goal is to provide public servants with a competitive, good and motivational wages for their dedicated performance,” Misiūnas told BNS.

Earlier this week, the Interior Ministry proposed centralizing selection for public service, revising the salary system and envisaging motivational instruments.

In the minister’s words, the proposed amendments should stipulate that public servants perform functions of public administration.

“All others who perform service functions, internal administration, i.e., for example, are personnel specialists and accountants, they will not be listed as public servants and will work by contract,” Misiūnas added.

The ministry wants the amendments to take effect in 2019.
