Riga Conference 2014 opens with discussions on global economy and security

More than 420 participants gathered in the new building of the National Library of Latvia with the aim of discussing current political, economic and security issues.

During the opening panel “Adjusting the Global Economy to Reflect Political Challenges” Member of the Lithuanian Seimas Andrius Kubilius expressed a hope that the Eastern Partnership summit 2015 will give a signal to Ukraine to be admitted to the European Union. European Commissioner for Development Andris Piebalgs stressed that if the EU wants to overcome difficulties raised by sanctions, it must focus on the overall development and commerce.

Russian revisionism and security took the central stage at the panel discussion “NATO Wales Summit – Revitalizing the Trans-Atlantic Bond”. Norwegian Minister of Defence Ine Eriksen Søreide opened discussion by acknowledging that the “security landscape has profoundly changed around us… We face a different Russia. What Russia has broken cannot be rebuilt in full.” Dr. Ariel Cohen, visiting fellow at The Heritage Foundation, added that confrontation between Russia and the Western alliance is unlike any 20-century conflict, stressing, that it is not only about hybrid warfare in Ukraine, it is about information, energy and economics.
