Seimas adopts resolution on Abkhazia, South Ossetia’s occupation

Adopted with 82 votes, the resolution underlines that “ten years ago Russia’s armed forces carried out aggression against its neighbor – Sakartvelo (Georgia), stripping it of part of its territory and establishing internationally-unrecognized puppet governments in the occupied territories”.

With the adopted document, the Seimas “condemns all forms of aggression, including an armed attack and invasion into other state’s territory” and regrets the fact that Russia has so far failed to withdraw its forces from the occupied zones.

The resolution used Georgia’s preferred name “Sakartvelo”, which was legalized in Lithuania as an alternative name for Georgia over a month ago. Tbilisi asked for the legalization of the authentic name, stating that “Georgia” is a Russian name.

Moscow recognized Abkhazia and South Ossetia, which declared their independence from Georgia in late 1990s, as independent states following the 2008 war between Russia and Georgia. Russia keeps thousands of its troops at military bases in the regions on a permanent basis. The international community considers Abkhazia and South Ossetia part of Georgia.
