“Taking into account the public opinion, the majority of Seimas members, I believe, will not back these amendments,” political scientists Tomas Janeliūnas from the Institute of International Relations and Political Science at Vilnius University told BNS.

His view is shared by fellow political scientists Rytis Bulota from the Vytautas Magnus University. In his opinion, the vote will probably be negative but, he added, support might increase if this issue is considered in the geopolitical sense as Lithuania’s support for Western values.

“If we want to show that we are totally different from Russia, we have nothing in common, so the adoption of such a law would clearly show Lithuania’s place in terms of values,” Bulota told BNS.

The bill on same-sex partnerships has been registered by members of the Social Democratic Party of Lithuania and Liberal Movement’s political  groups.

As survey last November showed that only 15 percent backed the legalization of same-sex partnerships in Lithuania and 79 percent were against.
