Shortfall of explosives found at Lithuanian engineering battalion – prosecutors

Elena Martinonienė, spokeswoman for the Prosecutor General’s Office, told BNS on Monday that “a possible shortfall of explosive material” had been found at the Kaunas-based military unit last Thursday.

The spokeswoman gave no details as to the quantity of explosives missing from the battalion.

“Officials treat this as a top danger, but there is a possibility that it was an accounting error,” she said.

The military said last Friday that a pre-trial investigation had been launched regarding a shortfall of “military assets”, but provided no details.

Captain Pavelas Lukjanovas, a military police public relations officer, said that the investigation had been started under Article 324 of the Criminal Code.

The article reads that “a serviceman who, through negligence, loses a weapon, ammunition, explosives, explosive materials, a vehicle or another military equipment entrusted to him for the purposes of service shall be punished by arrest or by a custodial sentence for a term of up to three years”.
