Inga Ruginienė, head of the Lithuanian Confederation of Trade Unions and chairwoman of the council, told BNS last week that trade unions continued to seek that the minimum wage before taxes be increased to 450 euros, from the current 400 euros.

However, Deputy Social Security and Labor Minister Eglė Radišauskienė told BNS that the government would stick to its proposal to raise the minimum wage to 420 euros.

Andrius Romanovskis, vice-president of the Lithuanian Business Confederation, told BNS that his organization saw the proposed increase to 420 euros as a compromise.

The Tripartite Council’s two previous meetings on a minimum wage increase ended without any agreement.

The council plays an advisory role as it is the government that makes final decisions.

The minimum wage was raised by 20 euros to 400 euros last year.

The country’s new Labor Code, in place since mid-2017, allows paying the minimum wage only for unskilled jobs.
