According to the police, an unidentified vehicle hit the cyclist in Rokiškis District on the road Juodupė-Aleknos-Aknistė at 10:20 p.m. on Sunday and fled.
The girl sustained an open fracture to her left leg and bruises to her left hand. She underwent surgery and is now in intensive care.
Robertas Krasauskas, acting chief of Rokiškis District police, told BNS on Monday that Latvian car plates were found at the hit-and-run scene.
“Police officers saw a car coming from Aleknos at around 10:45 p.m. and it ignored officers’ demand to stop. But the Rover already had Lithuanian plates. When the officers started chasing them, they did not stop, they were driving dangerously and causing danger to other traffic participants,” Krasauskas told BNS.
The officers fired four warning shots and then shot five times at the vehicle’s right front wheel, hitting it.
Two heavily drunk residents of Latvia, 24 and 32, were detained. An investigation is underway to identify who was driving the car.
