UN Security Council might meet to discuss Ukraine in January

“We do not discount the possibility that the Security Council might meet to discuss issues related to the Ukrainian conflict as early as January,” the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs‘ Information and Public Relations Department told BNS on Tuesday.

According to the ministry, together with partner countries, Lithuania “plans to expeditiously initiate meetings of the Security Council, taking into account the process’ changing dynamics, and also at any time when specific events demand the Security Council and its members’ adequate reaction.”

“Taking place in the heart of Europe, the ongoing bloody conflict and gross violations of the principles of the UN Charter pose threat not only for the regional but for global security as well. Therefore, Lithuania and other members of the UN Security Council believe that the ongoing aggression in Ukraine and the consequences of this aggression in the areas of security or human rights must remain at the centre of the Security Council’s attention,” the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
