Discussions will focus on how to more efficiently deal with illegal migration by Vietnamese citizens and how to accelerate the identification of these migrants, the State Border Guard Service (VSAT) said.

Officials will also discuss plans to sign in the future a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in immigration by VSAT and the Migration Department of Vietnam’s Public Security Ministry.

The Vietnamese delegation are to meet on Tuesday with Lithuanian Deputy Interior Minister Česlovas Mulma and VSAT Head Renatas Požėla.

On Wednesday, the delegation will go to the Foreigners Registration Center in Pabradė, close to Vilnius, and will later travel to a point in the eastern district of Zarasai where the national borders of Lithuania, Latvia and Belarus converge.

On Thursday, the Vietnamese delegation is scheduled to visit the VSAT Aviation Unit in the district of Trakai.

According to VSAT, border guards in 2012 detained 123 Vietnamese citizens trying to illegally cross the Lithuanian border. That number increased to 301 in 2014 and 382 in 2015 before easing to 226 in 2016 and falling to 87 in 2017. Sixty-two Vietnamese citizens have been detained since the start of 2018.
