Yasser Al-Any appealed against the Migration Department‘s decision to grant them temporary legal protection instead of the refugee status they sought.
“The asylum seekers failed to provide sufficient arguments regarding individual persecution directed directly against them and their minor children,” the Vilnius Regional Administrative Court said in a press release.
Judge Arunas Kaminskas told reporters that the Migration Department had adequately assessed the situation in Iraq.
The refugee status grants permanent residency in Lithuania, whereas legal protection grants only temporary residence, which would be lost once the conditions in the family’s home country changed. Legal protection also grants less financial support.
The Iraqi family of four arrived in Lithuania from Greece in mid-December.
